They keep us active, lower our stress, and provide a quiet comfort that only a loyal friend can. But on March 13, we set aside a specific day to honor the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout history.
In the eyes of the law and the military, these dogs are Veterans, not pets. They deserve the same dignity, respect, and recognition as any other member of the armed forces.
Did you know that every K-9 officer holds a military rank? In a tradition of respect, their rank is usually higher than their handler’s. It is our duty to ensure these loyal heroes are met with the same unwavering devotion they showed us in the field.
These officers are trained to an expert level in specialized skill sets that save lives every day, including:
Scent Detection: Sniffing out narcotics, explosives, and arson accelerants.
Search and Rescue: Tracking human scents across difficult terrain.
Tech Detection: Finding concealed electronic devices like thumb drives and hard drives.
The impact of a single K-9 officer is staggering. One well-trained dog can save between 600 to 1,000 man-hours each year, providing military and police units with the gift of time and safety.
Just like their human counterparts, military working dogs are always on the clock. From active combat zones around the globe to the streets of our hometowns, they protect and serve without hesitation. Whether they are currently on active duty or enjoying a well-earned retirement, they have earned our deepest gratitude.
